Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was an African-American poet, novelist, playwright, short story writer, and columnist. Hughes was a member of an abolitionist family. He was the great-great-grandson of Charles Henry Langston, brother of John Mercer Langston, who was the first Black American to be elected to public office, in 1855. The son of Carrie Langston Hughes (a teacher) and her husband, James Nathaniel Hughes, Langston Hughes was born James Mercer Langston Hughes in Joplin, Missouri. James Hughes, who studied as a lawyer but was denied permission by an all-white examining board in Oklahoma, left his family and the United States. James Hughes left for Cuba, then Mexico, as a consequence of the enduring racism in the United States, there he became a wealthy businessman. Hughes's parents divorced soon thereafter . Final Report of the Oklahoma Commission to Study The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 Compiled by Danney Goble The 1921 Tulsa Race Riot Commission originated in 1997 with House Joint Resolution No. 1035. The act twice since has been amended, first in 1998, and again two years later. The final rewriting passed each legislative chamber in March and be came law with Governor Frank Keating's signature on April 6, 2000. In that form, the State of Oklahoma extended the commission's authority beyond that originally scheduled, to February 28, 2001. The statute also charged the commission to produce, on that date, "a final report of its findings and recommendations" and to submit that report "in writing to the Governor, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and the Mayor and each member of the City Council of the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma."
